Charleston Welcome

The words "ironwork" and "Charleston" are synonymous! Although I'm not positive that Philip Simmons, Charleston's most celebrated ironworker (1912-2009), created this gate, he did design and fabricate 500 pieces through the course of his life (most of them decorate the concentrated Charleston peninsula). Another classic Charleston feature is the checkerboard floor. When used together, they must have been the original "mixed patterns" that are so very fashionable today!
